Small Dogs Can't Go Without Their Toothbrushes

Small Dogs Can't Go Without Their Toothbrushes
A visual inspection won't cut it: Regular oral care for small dogs is critical to prevent dental disease and to know when it strikes. A new study looking at oral care for small breed dogs may have dog owners thinking twice about their current oral care regimen. The study, conducted by the WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition and published in BMC Vet Research, examined the progression of periodontal disease in miniature schnauzers and found that without effective and frequent oral care, dental disease developed rapidly and advanced even more quickly with age."We all want to do the very best for our pets' health, and the study showed us that there's more than meets the eye when it comes to small dogs' oral health," said Dr. Stephen Harris, leader of the oral care team at WALTHAM, part of Mars Petcare. "The study findings help us better understand the way dental disease appears and progresses and...

Thai Exercise, Massage Ease Knee Osteoarthritis

Thai Exercise, Massage Ease Knee Osteoarthritis
Both Thai exercise combined with Thai massage and strengthening exercise combined with Swedish massage brought benefits to people with knee osteoarthritis, but the Thai program yielded more significant and longer-lasting results, according to recent research. The study, “The effectiveness of Thai exercise with traditional massage on the pain, walking ability and QOL of older people with knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled trial in the community,” involved 31 people with knee osteoarthritis. The study participants ranged in age from 50 to 85 and were randomly assigned to either a Thai physical therapy (TPT) group or a standard physical therapy (SPT) group. Both the TPT and SPT programs consisted of two phases. Phase one was supervised class-based TPT and SPT, which took place three days a week for eight weeks. During this same phase, participants were instructed to follow the program at home at least two days per week as well. The second phase was the home-based...

Bone-Boosting Benefits of Dried Plums

Bone-Boosting Benefits of Dried Plums
Fifty-seven million Americans suffer from low bone density or osteoporosis, a disease which causes bones to become so weak and brittle that even a minor fall or other stresses may cause fractures. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition in July examined the mechanism of the bone-protective properties of an unlikely source—California dried plums. To further understand the mechanism by which dried plums (prunes) improve bone health, researchers from San Diego State University and Florida State University used data collected from a previous 12-month clinical trial that compared the bone-protective effects of dried plums and dried apples. Results from this clinical trial confirmed the bone-protective properties of dried plums, and several animal studies have also supported this finding. However, the mechanisms by which dried plums impart their bone-protective properties remain unclear."While it is difficult to identify the exact mechanism behind dried plums' positive effect on bones, this study identified three potential...

Many Benefits of a Foot Massage During Pregnancy

Many Benefits of a Foot Massage During Pregnancy
You could say the foot is the foundation upon which we stand — literally. When your feet hurt, the rest of the body can be out of sorts. It’s important to take good care of the feet, particularly during pregnancy. The foot has 7,200 nerve endings. During pregnancy every one of those nerve endings are affected by elevated hormone levels and extra weight. As your client approaches her third trimester, swelling from fluid retention is common due to relaxin, a hormone that prepares the pelvic ligaments for childbirth.Foot massage not only helps to reduce edema, but can also increase flexibility and muscle tone and enhance your pregnant client’s sense of well being. Moreover, like many other types of massage, working on the feet can induce relaxation, stress relief and result in more restful sleep.Studies of the Many Benefits of a Foot Massage During PregnancyInternational Journal of Nursing PracticeA 2010 study, “Effect of foot massage...

Acupressure Eases Fatigue in Hemodialysis Patients

Acupressure Eases Fatigue in Hemodialysis Patients
Among patients with end-stage renal disease who were undergoing chronic hemodialysis, the application of 20 minutes of acupressure three times a week for four weeks resulted in a significant reduction in fatigue, as compared to both a placebo and control group, according to recent research. The study, “Effect of acupressure on fatigue in patients on hemodialysis,” involved 96 patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Criteria to participate in the study included a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease, undergoing hemodialysis for at least three months and a primary complaint of fatigue with a score of five or more on the Fatigue Severity Scale. Participants were randomly assigned to either the acupressure group, the placebo group or the control group, with 32 subjects in each group. Before and after the four-week intervention began, the subjects filled out the Piper Fatigue Scale, which assesses the behavioral, emotional, sensory and cognitive dimensions of mental fatigue. For the intervention, patients assigned to...

Corrective Chiropractic: Back Surgery Alternatives

Corrective Chiropractic: Back Surgery Alternatives
Recent studies released by The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) confirms what the chiropractic community has been preaching for years. Despite the severity of back pain, there is significant hope for full recovery by means of getting treatment from a chiropractor versus going through invasive back surgery. The study concentrated on workers suffering from back injury and released shocking data on just how unnecessary back surgery may be.As stated below in the official excerpt from the NCBI website, when back pain patients saw a back surgeon first, they were 42.7% more likely to go through with back surgery as means of treatment. Compare that number to only 1.5% of patients who first saw a chiropractor. So what does all this mean?Corrective chiropractic works, and it works without back surgery or habit forming pain medication. According to these numbers, more than 98% of patients who saw their chiropractor experienced a significant reduction or...
