Last year's winner was the Zebra. No, we're not talking about a wild animal race. We're talking about the winning tomato chosen by

participants of last year's heirloom tomato tasting event during Dayton's Heirloom Gardeners Food and Wine Weekend. The Port of Columbia, along with local partners the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, the Dayton Historic Depot, Pacific Power, and Northwest Public Radio, invite you to choose your favorite tomato during this second annual weekend event September 19 – 21, showcasing the amazing food, wine, and tour offerings available in this quaint farm town.

Located 30 miles northeast of Walla Walla, Dayton has a rich agricultural history that is manifested through gardens, restaurants, and artisan food businesses. Taste for yourself up to 15 varieties of heirloom tomatoes picked right out of the garden at TamiJoyFarm during the Tomato Tasting and Dining event held Saturday afternoon beginning at 4:00 pm.

In addition to tasting the rich and diverse flavors of sun-ripened heirloom tomatoes, the dinner features TamiJoyFarm-raised pork brats on rolls made at Dayton's Weinhard Café and Bakery, salads with fresh-picked farm produce, and hand-made individual berry pies. Wine tasting with Dumas Station and The Mortal Vintner and mircrobrew tasting by Chief Springs Fire and Irons are included in the ticket price, as well as tastings of Mace Mead Works mead. The dinner event is followed by live music by OK Sweetheart from 7 – 8:30.

The Port of Columbia's Artisan Food Center is home to four artisan food entrepreneurs and a commercial gardener who are growing, processing, and sharing their bounty. "Back stage" tours of the artisan cheese, granola, microroast coffee, wine, and mead production areas as well as the garden will be offered Saturday as part of the lodging package followed by a reception with tastings of all the food products.

The Boldman House Museum is offering guided tours of their heirloom garden as well as "back stage" tours of the museum, including the basement! Come see how 90-years' accumulation of goods has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind museum.

Other weekend events include heirloom garden tours, museum tours, and amazing local foods. The historic Weinhard Hotel is offering overnight lodging packages that include tickets to all weekend events.

Event details can be found online at heirloomweekend.com or by calling the Dayton Chamber of Commerce at 800-882-6299 or the Port of Columbia at 509-382-2577.
